AFRICAN STUDIES FACULTY

Since 2008, African Leadership Academy (ALA) has sought to identify, develop, and connect the most promising young leaders on the African continent. Our learning community serves 260 young leaders aged 16-19. Students spend two years at the academy engaging with the knowledge, skills, habits, and mindsets that will accelerate their trajectories of ethical and effective leadership. ALA is a learning community committed to leadership development through authentic practice, academic rigor, and intentional community. ALA also seeks to become a learning organization, invested in deliberate continuous improvement.

As ALA evolves as a learning community, we are seeking a teacher to join our African Studies Department. African Studies is one of our signature programmes. Required for all students, the multi-disciplinary courses invite students to wrestle with issues of Africa’s past and present, to better articulate a vision for a more peaceful and prosperous continent. The department enhances a students to develop their ability to think critically, argue cogently and The department also houses social science courses such as Cambridge A ‘level History and Economics.

ALA actively participates in a broad range of external opportunities and competitions, and challenges students to carry out independent learning. As ALA is a boarding school, every faculty member is expected to participate holistically in the life of the community, within the classroom and beyond.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Conduct engaging and challenging courses six days per week for truly exceptional students from across Africa.
• Serve as a faculty advisor for 6-8 students as they navigate a transformational journey of academic, personal, and social growth.
• Contribute to student life and leadership learning by coaching student teams, clubs, or societies.
• Serve as a tutor on duty in the residence one evening per week, from 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm.
• Work with peers to advance pedagogy, school culture, and student life.

Profile of Ideal Candidate

• You are an outstanding educator, ready for the next stage in your career.
• You enjoy bringing current developments and interdisciplinary elements into your classroom teaching and are enthusiastic at the prospect of building an appropriate curriculum for Africa’s leaders of the 21st century.
• Strong track record of delivering outstanding results and developing exceptional critical thinking and argumentation skills at an advanced secondary school level.
• A track record of success in preparing secondary school students for high-level international examinations (CAIEE/IB/AP) is desired.
• Experience living and working in Africa or demonstrated interest in Africa is a plus.
• Experience working in a boarding school environment is a plus.
• Experience coaching or mentoring young teachers is a plus.
• You are passionate about humanities/ political and social sciences; you read texts closely and inspire students to do the same.
• You are open to interacting with people from a wide variety of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• You are passionate about working with young people and encouraging them to set and meet standards of excellence.

Competencies and Experience

• University degree in Political or Social Sciences, African Studies, History, or equivalent is required.
• 5 - 10 years teaching experience.
• Experience teaching in English as an additional language is highly advantageous.
• Strong track record of working with and supporting young people towards challenging learning aims.
• Prior experience in a residential boarding school is valued but not required.
• Passion for the subject, highlighting its relevance to students and to the African continent.
• A capable facilitator of engaging and inclusive learning environments.
• A coaching mind-set that enables the growth and executive function-development of students
