ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented Qualitative Data Collection Intern from the graduating class of scholars at African Leadership College (ALC). The intern will assist with in-person data collection, focusing on gathering stories from fellow graduating scholars. The primary goal is to collect at least 60 high-quality, authentic stories that showcase the unique journeys of ALC graduates. This is a short-term contract lasting 1 month.

Responsibilities:

  • In-Person Interviews: Conduct face-to-face interviews with fellow graduating scholars, capturing their personal stories, achievements, and future goals.
  • Story Collection and Documentation: Collect and document a minimum of 60 stories from graduating scholars, ensuring each story reflects the transformative ALU experience.
  • Data Recording and Organization: Record interviews using audio tools or detailed written notes (with participant consent) and organize the data for easy access and analysis.
  • Stories Data Cleaning: Review and clean up the collected stories data, ensuring clarity, consistency, and completeness in all responses.
  • Ensure Story Quality: Follow provided interview guidelines to ensure all stories are authentic, focused on measurable impact, and aligned with ALU’s storytelling structure.
  • Build Rapport: Establish trust and create a comfortable environment for peers during interviews to encourage openness and meaningful storytelling.
  • Collaborate with the Impact Team: Work closely with the Impact Team to ensure consistency in data collection and regular updates on progress.

Ensure the safety and well-being of all young persons and vulnerable adults with whom we deal, by adhering to ALU’s comprehensive safeguarding policy, maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to any violations of safeguarding standards.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a graduating scholar from the African Leadership College (ALC). This role is exclusively for members of the graduating class, as familiarity with the scholars and their journeys is crucial for effective story collection.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage meaningfully with peers.
  • Experience or interest in qualitative research, storytelling, or journalism is a plus.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage time and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in using audio recording tools or taking detailed notes during interviews.
  • Familiarity with ALU’s mission and community, as well as the broader context of student journeys.
