About the Organization

The Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996. The mission of ACT is to partner with indigenous and other local communities to protect tropical forest and strengthen traditional culture. ACT has presence in Brazil, Colombia and the Guianas.

Specifically, ACT seeks to steadily increase the number of local communities in the Amazon who are able to monitor, sustainably manage and protect their traditional forestlands and significantly increase the area of Amazonian rainforest with improved protection. ACT’s strategic approach to conservation, focusing on sustainable land management and protection, secure and sustainable livelihoods, and strengthening community governance and culture, supports our vision for the Amazon and provides a clear, unified and long-term direction for how our organization operates.

ACT’s headquarters is located in Falls Church, Virginia.

Position Summary

The Junior Accountant is a key member of the Finance and Operations team. The Junior Accountant is responsible for the accounting operations of the ACT-US office, including maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and maintenance of a comprehensive set of controls to mitigate risk.

Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities of the position will include but are not limited to the following:

Principal Functions

  • Supporting the accounting function, including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable, ensuring compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Processing all ACT-US transactions in the financial system
  • Depositing incoming checks and keeping key staff informed of incoming checks, wires and ACH payments
  • Preparing and tracking invoices for reimbursement
  • Supporting the preparation of the monthly corporate credit card reconciliations
  • Supporting the preparation of the month-end and year-end closing processes
  • Supporting the development and enforcement of financial controls and guidelines to maximize protection of organizational assets, policies, procedures, and workflow
  • Supporting the implementation of accounting policies, practices, and procedures
  • Supporting the coordination of external audits
  • Monitoring the general finance inbox email account and providing information to colleagues as necessary
  • Supporting the onboarding of new staff members
  • Supporting the country offices’ finance teams as necessary

Required Education and Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in accounting
  • 2+ years of progressively advancing experience in accounting, ideally within the nonprofit sector
  • Knowledge of accounting regulatory standards (GAAP)
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting concepts including fund accounting and grant management and budgeting
  • Knowledge of detailed financial data analysis
  • Experience with financial systems
  • Advanced-level English speaker
  • Conversational ability in Spanish; Portuguese and/or Dutch a plus
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft 365 environment

Physical Requirements

  • This position will be working in a typical office setting, with no extremes in temperature or lighting.
  • No travel is expected for this position.
  • Applicants should be able to work with equipment typically found in an office and should be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without accommodation.
