We rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities
Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organization that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally.
Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organizations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.
Summary job description
The Technical Junior Manager will provide technical support to our partners in Tanzania, covering three of our four pillars (Secure Rights, Community-Based Fisheries Management and Food Security), implementing Blue Ventures fisheries data systems and supporting fisheries monitoring data processes across partners and communities in close collaboration with the global Technical Knowledge and Data Science teams. The role will entail providing technical assistance to partner organisations involved in community-based fisheries management and sharing technical and marine resource management experiences, including training our partners to use mobile monitoring tools to collect and analyse fisheries data and support data collection, analysis, and sharing so that communities can manage these resources adaptively.
Notably, the candidate will have experience in fisheries science and ecology, an understanding of community-led approaches to conservation, and will be able to support our partners in interpreting the data to inform management decisions. The successful candidate will provide bespoke training and technical support to local partners in all aspects of fisheries management and governance, including monitoring and evaluation of landings, particularly in the design and use of mobile-based data collection systems and supporting local partners in efforts to assist communities in the management of target small-scale fisheries.
We seek a candidate with technical knowledge and experience in fisheries, including a good understanding of community-based fisheries management principles. This person will have experience in a research setting managing data collection, ideally with knowledge from the fishery and socio-economic sectors. They will have substantial data collection, management, and analysis skills and demonstrable practical experience in working with environmental data to produce reports and analyses. This position will involve communicating complex scientific knowledge to non-technical audiences, so excellent communication and the ability to distil technical language for a lay audience are essential.
The successful candidate will contribute to developing and rolling out tools and training to our partners in Tanzania to help communities monitor and manage fisheries and coastal ecosystems, working closely with the global Technical Knowledge, Data Science and Programme performance teams. These types of tools and materials include:
Accessible tools and appropriate technologies:
Intuitive to use and readily available, including software and mobile apps for data collection and interpretation; simple decision-support tools for assessment, planning, and problem resolution; and community-level materials for everyday activities, such as meeting facilitation guides
Educational resources:
Manuals, guides, videos, and online materials that provide concise information and serve as self-learning tools, allowing partners to access and acquire knowledge at their own pace.
Knowledge development:
Structured learning experiences to transfer theory to practise and enhance the background knowledge and competencies such as workshops or webinars.
Skill development:
Specific hands-on training, mentoring, or learning exchange programs to enhance technical expertise and the skills that are relevant to fisheries.
