We rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities
Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organization that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally.
Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organizations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.
Summary job description
Do you have a passion and talent for communication and advocacy? Do you care about the marine environment and the coastal communities that rely on it? Do you want to be part of a rapidly growing social enterprise, advocating for the rights of small-scale fishers and showcasing grassroots conservation efforts in some of the world’s most important marine 1 biodiversity hotspots? Are you responsive, dynamic and able to get things done in a fast-moving work environment?
We’re looking for a passionate and creative Communications and Advocacy Officer to join our team in Timor-Leste. The successful candidate will work closely with our Regional Senior Communications Officer and Global colleagues to capture, document, and share our learning and experiences in reports, toolkits and news articles, as well as telling engaging stories from the field, whether they be photo stories, videos, blogs, or social media campaigns, and advocacy.
This exciting position will harness digital storytelling, data visualisation and digital marketing tools to raise the profile of Timor-Leste’s small-scale coastal fishers, telling their stories through their own words and experiences. The successful candidate will have outstanding written communication and editing skills, and the ability to adapt messaging to target diverse audiences. This will include showing empathy, humility and sensitivity to community, partner, and government interests in all communications, and writing in a style that exemplifies Blue Ventures’ core values.
This role entails working in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary and international organisation, with excellent opportunities for creative thinking and professional development. You will be able to demonstrate experience of working independently and solving complex problems in challenging situations. The successful candidate will report to the Regional Senior Communications Officer and will be based in Dili, with regular travel to work with field teams.
