Job purpose

The Engineering Team Lead serves as the lead structural engineer in the East Africa Region performing and managing design engineering activities, development, and training. The focus of the position is on bridge design, production of drawings for construction, bridge inspections, and maintenance. The position is regionally focused, based in a program country, and reports to the Director of Engineering.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Design and drafting of cable bridges and other structural forms within the Bridges to Prosperity (B2P) portfolio
  • Supervise design engineering work in regional programs including project feasibility, detailed designs, and design modifications during construction
  • Coordinate and plan engineering needs with operational managers in each program
  • Manage bridge construction quality control within each program
  • Support the construction teams in resolving technical and site-related issues
  • Plan and oversee bridge inspections, evaluate inspection reports, and recommend maintenance or repairs
  • Onboard and train new members of the technical team
  • Represent the B2P Engineering team with stakeholders such as government departments, development organizations, and funding partners
  • Support the Technical Assistance team in the delivery of bridge design training and training content development
  • Collaborate with the Director of Engineering as needed (research, design development, quality assurance, and Technical Assistance)

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
  • Professional/Chartered Engineer status (PE/CEng) or equivalent
  • Minimum 8 years of related engineering experience
  • Sound technical knowledge in the field of structural engineering
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD drafting
  • Rigorous and detail-oriented organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with proven problem-solving skills
  • Curiosity and adaptability - capable of working with different cultures and languages
  • Ability to work independently after given clear direction
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • An interest in sustainable construction would be an advantage

Working conditions

The position is based within the program country and may require travel to regional Bridges to Prosperity existing or prospective project sites.
