OVERVIEW
Building Tomorrow, an international nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that all children achieve foundational literacy and numeracy, is seeking exceptional, values-driven Numeracy Research and Development (NRD) Fellows to join the NRD Project in Butaleja District. NRD Fellows will work directly with Centre Coordinating Tutors and Area Inspectors to support Primary 1–3 teachers in the implementation of innovative numeracy teaching and learning practices aimed at improving early-grade learning outcomes. They will collaborate with the NRD MEL Coordinator to collect and analyze data, document lessons from the field, and facilitate community engagement for continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will be passionate about education, data use, and community-led development, and must be willing to live and work full-time in Butaleja District for the duration of the NRD Project (through 2028).

Started in 2006, Building Tomorrow supports community-powered learning in rural areas. Through over 650 Building Tomorrow Fellows and over 20,000 Community Education Volunteers, Building Tomorrow has enrolled over 216,000 out-of-school children and reached more than 850,000 learners with our signature Roots to Rise (R2R) literacy and numeracy camps. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
The NRD Fellows will work closely with Primary 1–3 teachers and the NRD Project Team to support the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the NRD Project in Butaleja District. Fellows will play a key role in helping teachers apply innovative numeracy teaching practices, gathering classroom and community feedback, and ensuring the consistent and accurate collection of data that measures project progress and impact. This position also contributes to fostering a culture of learning by sharing insights from the field, supporting data-driven decision-making, and strengthening community engagement around education.
This is a full-time, field-based position located in Butaleja District for the entire project duration. The NRD Fellow will report to the NRD Regional Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities
Teacher capacity building and mentoring
- Work directly with Primary 1–3 teachers and head teachers to support the integration of NCDC-approved numeracy teaching and learning practices in classrooms and across school systems.
- Conduct training of teachers in P1-3 on numeracy pedagogy in collaboration with district, PTC and central government officials
- Provide coaching and mentoring of teachers as directed by government counterparts to support the adoption of the numeracy curriculum.
- Document classroom experiences, challenges, and success stories to inform project learning.
Monitoring and Data Collection
- Support the collection of accurate and timely data from schools using established tools and systems (including digital tools such as TaroWorks).
- Support use of NRD monitoring tools by area inspectors, CCTs, as well as conducted ongoing monitoring during school visits
- Ensure that data gathered from classrooms, teachers, and communities meets quality standards and aligns with project objectives.
- Participate in regular data review sessions to reflect on findings, suggest improvements, and inform schools that need additional support.
- Work with the Research Manager and the external research team to ensure NRD-related research projects are well executed.
Learning and Reflection
- Participate in monthly meetings to interpret data, create monthly support plans, and document learnings.
- Share insights, lessons learned, and promising practices with the NRD team to inform project decision-making.
- Promote a data-informed and reflective approach among teachers and local education actors.
Community Engagement
- Collaborate with head teachers and school administration to strengthen school-level ownership and accountability for early-grade learning outcomes.
- Work with the District Education Office, Coordinating Center Tutors (CCTs), and local leaders to strengthen community ownership of education initiatives.
- Mobilize community support for early-grade learning and advocate for continued investment in children’s education.
Collaboration and Reporting to NRD Team
- Coordinate with the NRD Regional Coordinator and Research Manager to provide updates, summaries, and reports on activities and progress.
- Contribute to project documentation, including success stories, lessons learned, and case studies from the field.
- Participate in joint review meetings and contribute to improving project implementation strategies.
Qualifications, Education Background, and Required Skills:
- Must be a former Building Tomorrow Fellow (Cohort 8 or 9).
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Statistics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in solid working relationships with government or external partners and school improvement.
- Strong capacity building and mentoring skills.
- Familiarity with data collection and reporting tools (digital tools experience is an advantage).
- Strong analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently in rural settings and collaborate with multiple stakeholders.
- Passionate about education, data use, and community-led development.
- Willing and able to live and work full-time in Butaleja District for the entire project duration (3 years).
- The ability to speak Lunyole is an added advantage.
