OVERVIEW

Building Tomorrow, an international nonprofit dedicated to providing literacy and numeracy for all children, is seeking a highly skilled Research & Analyst Consultant to provide technical leadership and capacity building for our Program and Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) and Pedagogy teams to support our research portfolio. The primary focus of this consultancy is to transition technical expertise to internal staff while supporting data analysis for ongoing projects. Reporting to the Chief Education Officer, the Research & Analyst Consultant will utilize their strong expertise in quantitative and qualitative research to support learning and upskill the team.

Started in 2006, Building Tomorrow supports community-powered learning in rural areas. Through over 650 Building Tomorrow Fellows, 5,230 government teachers, and over 20,000 Community Education Volunteers, Building Tomorrow has enrolled over 216,000 out-of-school children and reached more than 950,000 learners with our signature Roots to Rise (R2R) literacy and numeracy camps. Between offices in the USA, Uganda, and Rwanda, Building Tomorrow has a full-time staff of over 350, just eight of whom work outside East Africa. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

The Research & Analyst Consultant will work closely with the MEL and Pedagogy teams to support data analysis and collection for ongoing projects and upskill the team in related skills.

This position is for a total of 100 hours of work over the next four months. This position reports to the Chief Education Officer.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE

Technical Upskilling & Capacity Building

  • Design and deliver targeted training for the MEL team on advanced quantitative analysis tools (e.g., Stata, R, or Python) and data organization best practices.
  • Partner with the MEL Manager to streamline internal data management workflows to ensure the team can independently handle complex datasets.

Research Tool Design

  • Develop and train others on general research protocols, sampling strategies and data collection tools in collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team (MEL).

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Support

  • Collaborate with MEL Coordinators to design robust data collection frameworks and methodologies for ongoing projects.
  • Establish a 'Monthly Data Review' cycle for MEL Coordinators to ensure program evidence is being used for real-time decision-making.

Qualitative Systems Development

  • Partner with the Education Systems Strengthening (ESS) team to build out a qualitative feedback system to capture nuanced insights from the field.
  • Guide the selection of appropriate qualitative methods (e.g., focus groups, case studies) that align with Building Tomorrow’s community-powered model.

Project Data Management & Transition

  • Lead the cleaning, analysis, and visualization of research project data.
  • Mentor MEL coordinator(s) to take over the full ownership of the analysis by the end of the consultancy.
  • Prepare documentation on data collection and analysis processes, including analysis scripts in R or Stata, and arrange for their storage.
  • Work, as needed, with external consultants.

MUST HAVES

  • A degree in Economics, Statistics, Education, Public Policy, Sociology, or another relevant field.
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Proficiency with at least one data analysis (e.g., Stata, R, SPSS, Python) and one visualization tool (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience developing and leading trainings
  • The ability to work across teams, country offices and with external academic and technical partners
  • Experience working with foundational learning and/or NGOs preferred.
  • First-rate communication skills (in English), both oral and written, with a keen attention to detail, including the ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and compelling manner.
