CommonLit is a nonprofit EdTech organization dedicated to providing high-quality literacy instruction to low-income students and students of color to prepare them for success in college and careers. We operate a free online reading and writing program, www.commonlit.org , that is used by millions of teachers and students worldwide each month. We are a quickly growing team of passionate professionals - many of whom are former teachers . Our team is now over 100 full-time employees spread across ~30 states.

Position Overview

The Finance team at CommonLit oversees all core and accounting operations across the organization. As a member of the Finance team, the Finance and Accounting Coordinator serves as the primary steward of the organization’s financial records and recordkeeping practices. The Coordinator records all of the organization’s transactions into the general ledger and manages both accounts receivable and accounts payable. The Coordinator processes vendor invoices and documentation, communicating with vendors as necessary, in addition to also supporting general financial and accounting workstreams such as the organization’s annual audit and 990 process and periodic financial reporting.

Responsibilities

Transaction Entry and Account Reconciliation

  • Perform accounting processes including journal entries, allocations, account reconciliations and general ledger transactions
  • Manage CommonLit’s accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Manage accounting records in CommonLit’s accounting software
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and all balance sheet accounts, reviewing for input accuracy and prepare monthly reports
  • Liaise with the Program Delivery team on matters relating to payments, payment tracking, and accounts receivable

Vendor Management

  • Process and reconcile vendor invoices and payment records
  • Facilitate and manage new vendor setup and maintenance
  • Perform vendor statement reconciliation, highlighting and resolving discrepancies as necessary
  • Communicate with vendors regarding vendor bills, payments, W9s, bank remittance information and maintain vendor and payment records
  • Process payments to vendors and external parties as necessary

Tax and Audit Support

  • Provide support as needed during the annual audit and preparation of CommonLit’s form 990
  • Support the preparation of 1099 and 1096 tax forms

Other

  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial and budget reports
  • Assist with annual budget process
  • Support grants as required, tracking grant expenditures and reimbursements
  • Prepare financial reports to support philanthropy efforts and other fundraising-related reporting as needed
  • Process internal reimbursements on a bimonthly basis
  • Perform additional bookkeeping duties as needed

Physical & Additional Requirements

  • This role involves prolonged periods sitting/standing at a desk and working on a computer

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a relevant field or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of bookkeeping experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience using accounting software. Experience with Sage Intacct preferred.
  • Strong understanding of common Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable procedures. Experience developing and/or improving AR/AP processes preferred.
  • Strong general knowledge of accounting principles; fundamental knowledge of GAAP
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • High level of discretion and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Energetic self-starter prepared to take initiative on a wide range of responsibilities
  • Ability to follow directions and work with minimal supervision

$70,000 - $75,000 a year

Compensation and Benefits: $70,000 - $75,000 annually
