EarthEnable is transforming how people live by making homes healthier for families across rural Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda and helping to reduce the polluting impact of the building industry on the environment. Most Rwandans, Ugandans and Kenyans live in homes with dirt floors that are dusty, unsanitary, and fertile breeding grounds for parasites and germs. While replacing a dirt floor with concrete has significant health benefits (e.g., reducing diarrhea by 50% and parasitic infections by 80%), concrete is unaffordable for many who need it and is a huge contributor to global pollution.
To counter the environmental and affordability issues surrounding concrete, EarthEnable has spent the past 8+ years developing and selling high-quality, earthen floors and plasters that are 80% cheaper than concrete with 90% less embodied energy.
About the Role
The Casual Labourer supports the Operations Officer with manual work in construction, varnish handling, material movement, store organization, and field support. The role is hands-on and requires physical strength, reliability, and the ability to follow instruction.
Casual labourers are critical in ensuring that field operations and floor installations run smoothly and safely.
Key Responsibilities:
- Construction Support
- Assist in preparing construction sites, including clearing, leveling, and arranging materials.
- Support masons and the field team during floor installation activities.
- Carry and move materials such as soil, sand, varnish jerrycans, tools, and aggregates.
- Keep the construction site clean, safe, and well-organized at all times.
- Material Handling & Movement
- Load and unload materials from vehicles safely.
- Assist in the movement of varnish, tools, and supplies to and from sites.
- Report any damaged or missing materials to the Operations Officer immediately.
- Support daily store organization.
- Store & Inventory Support
- Help maintain a clean and orderly storeroom.
- Arrange materials according to guidance from the Operations Officer.
- Assist with weekly stock counts by identifying and grouping materials correctly.
- Production & Operations Support
- Assist in basic varnish production tasks under supervision.
- Clean tools and production areas and ensure safe storage.
- Support field logistics as directed by the Operations Officer.
- Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety guidelines and use PPE correctly at all times.
- Report any unsafe conditions immediately.
- Adhere to EarthEnable’s operational and safety protocols.
- Additional Duties
- Perform any other manual or operational support tasks assigned by the Operations Officer.
- Maintain professionalism and teamwork while working in rural communities.
Minimum Requirements
- Physically fit and able to safely lift/carry materials.
- Willingness to work outdoors and travel to rural construction sites.
- Ability to follow instructions closely and work under supervision.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to completing tasks on time.
- Prior experience in construction or manual labour is an added advantage.
