Over the last 10 years, Ellevation Education has built a thriving business serving the administrators, teachers, and specialists who support English Learners at public schools across the U.S. Today, over 1,500 school districts use our software to manage their EL programs and drive instructional impact in their district. We are a successful, rapidly growing business with a real mission -- help English Learners achieve their highest aspirations.
Design and user experience are integral aspects of realizing this mission so we are looking for an experienced full-stack Senior Product Designer to help lead design within a core area of our Flagship product. We are currently making a series of major investments and are building powerful tools for educators to better collect, analyze, and aggregate data so that they can take action and communicate decisions to support student progress within the EL program.
This is a hands-on role where you will work with an agile team of Product Managers and Engineers to help shape the product direction, craft experiments, validate ideas, and iterate to deliver best-in-class user experiences that our customers love. The right candidate to join our growing design team can formulate strong informed opinions, work holistically across the UX stack, and find effective ways to impact our business.
Product & Design Culture
We are organized into small cross-functional product teams that focus on key problems to solve in the context of their specific domain. We focus on outcomes over output. Our teams are empowered to research, prototype, and solicit user feedback to validate hypotheses. We engage users early and rapidly iterate so that the end result is a high-confidence, high-value product. We aim to foster an environment where we have the runway to experiment and learn from failure while tackling tricky challenges.
We also celebrate being accountable to outcomes which means signing up to pursue that vision by knocking down obstacles that get in the way. This looks like conducting experiments which throw off learnings, adjusting strategy based on those learnings, and delivering products to end-users that change behavior and drive real value for the business.

Outcomes:

  • Drive value by discovering and addressing our customer’s most acute product challenges. Work alongside your team through product discovery, leveraging your expertise to anticipate user needs, and develop concepts and prototypes to drive experimental learning.
  • Champion design thinking within your team by articulating your hypotheses, assumptions, and rationale for your proposed solutions. Ensure that designs are backed by sound methodology, research, and data.
  • Deliver high-quality products into the hands of our users by thinking through scenarios, iterating frequently to remove flaws in your solutions, and validating that the finished product meets the high standards our design team holds.

Impact:

  • 1 month - Learn about the key challenges and context facing the company, your product area, your team, and the broader UX Team. Build relationships with key collaborators laying a foundation for your work together. Have a solid understanding of the impact, values, culture, and vision of our UX Team.
  • 3 months - Continue building trust and shared goals with your product and engineering counterparts. Be an active member of the UX Team, contributing to our norms, rituals, and standards. Partner with other Flagship designers on shared artifacts and initiatives. Deliver value to the business through designing workflows and forming an understanding of how to deliver longer term success in an iterative, incremental process.
  • 6 months - Own the design of your product area, work with your product manager to define short-term and long-term objectives, and continuously learn and deliver results based on those learnings. Leverage the trust you have built to promote design thinking and best practices within your team. Develop strong relationships with other members of the greater Flagship team to strengthen cross-functional work.
  • 12 months - Use the expertise and context you have built over the past year to participate more broadly in the overall product strategy and direction. Actively contribute to the development and adoption of Backpack, our design system. Influence and evangelize our design culture, values, processes, and vision to the greater organization.

About you:

  • You have 5+ years of relevant UI/UX and Product Design experience in a B2B SaaS or adjacent environment.
  • You are experimental and curious; you love to test ideas, learn quickly, fail fast, and iterate.
  • You demonstrate an eagerness to learn from others and a desire to contribute to team betterment.
  • You are a systems thinker who is constantly looking for patterns and connections across our products as well as how we work together.
  • You sweat the details but also excel at big-picture thinking which makes you great at strategic trade-offs.
  • You have sharp data visualization skills and love to design intuitive and innovative workflows.
  • You are passionate about solving complex problems for educators and students.

Travel:

  • Remote employees for this role will be expected to travel about 10 times per year to Boston office or company off sites.
