- Plans and manages transportation which includes developing high-level transport strategies, selecting carriers, negotiating rates, scheduling routes, and monitoring shipments to increase efficiency and productivity.
- Utilizes transportation management systems (TMS) and other software (e.g. barcodes and tracking software) to track shipments, analyze data, allocate and record resources and improve the general efficiency of all processes.
- Manages, leads and motivates a team of transportation and logistics personnel, including drivers, warehouse team, and dispatchers.
- Manages budgets by overseeing transportation expenditures, and negotiating with suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers ensuring that costs are minimized without compromising efficiency or service quality.
- Ensures compliance with company policies, transportation legislation and safety standards.
- Keeps abreast of industry trends and developments in transportation and logistics.
- Develops transportation relationships, and ensures all partners in the supply chain are working efficiently to ensure smooth operations.
- Books subcontractors and ensure they deliver within agreed terms.
- Resolves and mitigates all issues or complaints related to transportation such as delays, damaged goods, or lost shipment and logistics.
- Develops and maintains standard metrics, prepares reports on transportation performance, analyzes data identifying areas for improvement, and implements corrective actions.
- Coordinates with warehouse managers to ensure proper storage and movement of goods within warehouses, optimizing inventory levels, distribution of products, and ensuring accurate record-keeping.
- Collaborates with other managers and staff to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
- Analyzes expenditures and other financial information to develop plans, policies, and budgets for increasing profits and improving services.
- Sets operations policies and standards, including determination of safety procedures for the handling of goods and vehicles.
- Recommends or authorizes capital expenditures for the acquisition of new equipment or property to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Prepares management recommendations, such as proposed fee and tariff increases or schedule changes.
- Provides administrative and technical assistance to all Farmerline units requiring transportation-related assistance.
