Role Overview: Accounting Consultant
As an Accounting Consultant, you will play a hands-on role in keeping our accounting operations running smoothly during a period of team absences. You'll jump in to help close the books, perform reconciliations, process AP, organize documentation, and address known issues we've identified but haven't had the capacity to fix.
We're looking for someone who can plug in quickly, execute reliably, and also spot opportunities to improve how we work. This includes optimizing accounting workflows, cleaning up documentation systems, and supporting the development of practical internal guidance on common expense types.
This role is ideal for someone who can balance tactical accounting work with light systems/process thinking and who is comfortable operating with some ambiguity while driving clarity.
This is a full-time, six-month position with a flexible remote policy. The role can be based in Europe (Lisbon, Berlin, or other locations), with a daily rate of €300–€350, or in the US (Eastern Time Zone), with a daily rate of $450–$500.
We’ll trust you to:

- Provide surge support on an as needed basis across the full spectrum of accounting and financial reporting activities.
- Design and implement a centralized e-filing structure for accounting documentation - organized by period, vendor, type of entry, and supporting documents.
- Contribute to the quality control of human resources and benefits administration by assisting in the manual reconciliation of payroll, health insurance benefits, contractor fees, and related items on a per person per month basis.
- Help with closing the books each month by assisting with various manual reconciliations, such as: Cash, AR, Accrued Revenue, Prepaids, AP, Accrued Expenses, and Notes Payable.
- Support in processing accounts payable, liaising with the program team as necessary to ensure timely disbursements.
- Assist in maintaining e-files with all supporting documentation to support accounting entries.
- Contribute to special projects as necessary, typically making use of advanced Excel functions as appropriate.
2. Efficiency & Workflow Optimization
- Analyze and redesign inefficient accounting workflows to reduce manual steps and improve accuracy.
- Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks (e.g., import templates for entries, Excel reconciliation files, batch approvals).
- Propose tools (e.g., accounting software features, add-ons, Excel automations) to streamline recurring processes.
- Help reduce the month-end close timeline by introducing close calendars, checklists, and recurring task lists.
3. US Tax Compliance Review & Mosey Integration Support
- If the candidate has bandwidth/skill set, shall we have them look into our US state and local tax compliance and/or help get us more fully established on Mosey:
- Appropriate candidates may be tasked with reviewing the Company’s tax and employer status in various US states and local jurisdictions and recommending to the CFO any appropriate revisions to the Company’s US compliance service provider.
We’d love to see the following:
- 5–10 years of experience in accounting, ideally with exposure to government grants and contracts.
- Strong understanding of US GAAP and day-to-day accounting operations, including month-end close, reconciliations, and expense categorization.
- Confident handling AP, AR, prepaids, accruals, and payroll/benefits reconciliation.
- Skilled in Excel/Google Sheets — able to build reconciliation tools, templates, and perform analysis using formulas, pivot tables, and lookups.
- Comfortable navigating accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks) and maintaining structured, digital documentation.
- Able to identify inefficient workflows and suggest improvements, automation, or tooling to reduce manual steps.
- Quick learner who can plug into existing systems and workflows with limited onboarding.
- Strong communicator who can clearly document guidance and collaborate with non-finance colleagues.
- Cross-cultural communication experience, with the ability to collaborate effectively across different functions and remote teams.
- Capability to explain financial concepts clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
- Professional fluency in written and spoken English (Portuguese is a plus).
