ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY & RESPONSIBILITIES

As a senior leader overseeing business advisory and training in South Sudan, the Head of BGS will guide a high-performing department of staff operating across urban, peri-urban, and refugee settings in 5 Refugee camps across South Sudan

The Head of BGS, South Sunda will shape strategy, drive operational excellence, strengthen talent across the country, and ensure that entrepreneurs receive high-impact advisory and training services. Specifically, the Head of BGS will have the following responsibilities:

CLIENT DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT (70% TIME)

  • Lead, manage, and coach BGS South Sudan staff, including direct supervision of Program Managers, Business Development Managers, and Training Managers to deliver impactful services to Inkomoko's clients.
  • Manage project deliverables, reporting, and partnership relations with internal and external partners.
  • Stay up to date with the entrepreneurship industry across South Sudan and East Africa, translating insights into value for clients and programs. Set the department's strategic direction, cascade annual organizational goals, and monitor performance against targets.
  • Work with operational directors across People & Culture, Finance, MEL, and IT to strengthen operational systems and ensure a strong backbone of support for program execution.
  • Collaborate with Communications to promote Inkomoko’s programs, client success stories, and brand positioning, ensuring alignment with donor requirements and market-systems objectives.
  • Work with the Investment department to coordinate pre- and post-investment Business Development services support for clients.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Inkomoko’s regional offices to harmonize delivery, codify best practices, and share learning.
  • Serve as a key member of the Inkomoko Country Leadership Team, ensuring national and regional operational cohesion.
  • Act as a strategic thought partner to the Managing Director of South Sudan on country growth, fundraising, and partnerships.
  • Strengthen department quality and productivity, developing staff capabilities and fostering a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement..
  • Oversee personnel matters, including staffing plans, hiring, professional development, and workforce planning for new locations and functions. Contribute to inclusive policies and advocacy efforts that benefit marginalized entrepreneurs, particularly refugees and displaced persons in South Sudan.
  • Maintain and grow Inkomoko’s relationships with the local government, various program partners, and external stakeholders, in partnership with other company leaders.
  • Benchmark and position Inkomoko’s services relative to client needs, market trends, and broader ecosystem.
  • Generate programmatic insights with the MEL team to ensure product impact and relevance, and be able to report insights to Executive leadership, Board, and external partners.
  • Advance private sector adoption in partnership with the Managing Director
  • Work with the team to implement Market systems development initiatives, ensuring relevance and measurable outcomes.
  • In partnership with the Managing Director, represent the organisation in engagements with external parties, including but not limited to Government, Donors and the Private sector
  • Organise and attend advocacy events in partnership with the Managing Director and the advocacy team
  • Other duties to support organizational culture and leadership.

PRODUCT INNOVATION & EXPANSION (20% TIME)

  • Innovate and iterate on existing products to enhance value for clients, in alignment with Inkomoko’s impact strategies and Vision 2030, in close collaboration with the Inkomoko Regional Director of BGS.
  • Develop and execute market expansion strategies, pilot approaches, test hypotheses, and refine training and advisory models. Lead the opening of new offices in South Sudan as needed
  • Modify or develop new Business Development products to meet client evolving needs and emerging market opportunities.
  • Partner with senior leadership to drive change management, ensuring new products are rolled out with fidelity and staff are equipped with the skills to deliver them.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & REVENUE GENERATION (10% TIME)

  • Partner with fundraising colleagues to identify, develop, and negotiate proposals/budgets with institutional clients and donors in alignment with Inkomoko’s priorities.
  • Co-manage department expenses with the Regional Program Director, setting annual and multi-year budgets, and strategically allocating resources to achieve quality department outputs.
  • Work with the Finance Department for timely billing and financial reporting to partners.

Qualifications include:

  • Experience with the development of micro and small enterprises required.
  • Experience with refugee and IDP entrepreneurs and financing is strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of leadership, including significant experience in team development and growth.
  • Experience with product development – through the lens of human-centered design – and a willingness to test, fail, iterate, and test again, incorporating data, not your own biases.
  • Ability to care about your colleagues and challenge them simultaneously (i.e. “Radical Candor”)
  • Strong experience in project management, budgeting and managing outcomes.
  • Unrelenting perseverance, personal integrity, and critical thinking skills
  • A nuanced understanding of justice and fairness in the workplace
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines – must be both strategic and operational.
  • Ability to work with high-profile individuals with discretion, professionalism, and responsiveness.
  • Fluent in English, additional proficiency in South Sudanese Arabic is strongly preferred.
  • 8+ years of work experience in a relevant or applicable field
  • MBA or equivalent preferred
