How You Will Make an Impact:

The Vice President, External Affairs will perform government relations, stakeholder development and outreach, advocacy, campaigns, outreach, policy research, , build, and maintain strategic external relationships and identify strategic networking opportunities. This position will design, develop, and execute strategic collaborations to further organizational growth, to deliver qualitative results, to increase awareness and visibility, and to improve external benefits for the organization. This position reports to the Chief External Affairs Officer or designee.

  • Develop and oversee organization’s Civic Engagement effort.
  • Represent the organization to governmental, elected, and appointed officials, civic and community organizations.
  • Connect with government officials, agencies, education, and civic leaders to form collaborative relationships with community-based organizations and other nonprofits.
  • Effectively represent the organization and its vision through a variety of mediums including individual meetings, public speaking, conferences, publications, and social media.
  • Identify challenges and emerging opportunities for the organization and partner with the Chief External Officer and organizational leadership to develop appropriate actions steps.
  • Work with the Chief External Affairs to implement outreach activities, online and social media initiatives.
  • Work with organization departments to ensure accurate and relevant messaging, high quality data and evidence is used to inform external affairs activities and products.
  • Work closely with organizational leadership to create motivational messaging and materials for diverse target audiences to help drive philanthropic support.
  • Utilize enterprise systems to monitor current and new relationships.
  • Work effectively with other members of External Affairs and Executive Team.
  • Support expansion efforts locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Support consultant engagement. Perform administrative duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned. These may be changed or modified from time to time.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manage, coordinate, supervise, coach, and direct the hiring, training, timely performance evaluations of team members, oversee their daily activities and oversee the daily workflow of the department as assigned.
  • Manage, hire, train external community relations consultants.
  • Manage and coordinate with local, state, and federal legislative advocates.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to the area of employment.
  • Strong understanding of legislative process, government organizations, non-profit organizations, education and the public-sector.
  • Strong communicator; strong writing and verbal communication skills and experience; able to interface with a variety of audiences, both internal and external.
  • Strong understanding of large-scale mobilization campaigns and advocacy initiatives.
  • Ability to design, build and manage a highly effective and comprehensive external affairs program, associated programs, and campaigns.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving environment and political landscape.
  • A demonstrated record of building strong, collaborative relationships across organizational lines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communications, or related field required, master’s degree preferred.
  • 7 years of experience in communications, campaigns, or government relations for nonprofit, political, corporate, and/or public agency organizations.
  • 5 years of experience in advocacy and government relations with an understanding of city, state and federal policies and regulations and their impact on institutional positioning.
  • Progressive management experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of K-12 Education highly preferred.
  • Experience leading, or working with, large coalitions and partnerships to influence government decisions and public policy.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% in performance of job duties is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Vision: Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for prolong periods, prepare, or inspect documents and operate office equipment.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear average or typical conversations and receive and understand ordinary information.

  • Mental Demands: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret, and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Frequent multi-tasking, changing of task priorities, repetitious exacting work. Understand how to manage stress. high workflow management, high project coordination, and high people engagement.
  • Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together, use hands to grasp, and manipulate small objects; twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.
  • Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors. Prolonged period sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Work in a low to moderate noise environment with frequent deadline pressures.
