POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a skilled and visionary Lead Design Strategist to join our design team. As the Lead Design Strategist, you will be responsible for shaping the overall design strategy and driving the creation of compelling, intuitive, and seamless user experiences across our products and services.

You will play a pivotal role in defining the user experience and inform product strategy that will shape the future of finance for our members. Design at Oportun is dedicated to the cultivation, delivery, and thoughtful reflection on the systems, mechanisms, languages, and assets that our customers (internal and external) interact with on a daily basis. The brass tacks of our design philosophy are quite simple: we succeed in our obsession for our members (we call them members instead of customers), their unique needs, their present challenges, and their future goals. We model and teach empathy, we sweat the details, and we deliver experiences that encourage beneficial (and delightful!) outcomes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead end-to-end design strategy projects that align with user needs and company goals, including planning, discovery, synthesis, ideation, design, and testing of new product and services.
  • Lead collaborative engagements (e.g. workshops, design sprints) with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and data analysts, to define design requirements and execute on the product vision.
  • Present persuasive member-centric concepts and strategies to partners, including executives and product teams. Effectively communicate rationale and the impact on business objectives.
  • Utilize a wide variety of design research methods to uncover member needs, pain points, and behaviors. Inform design and product decisions with member feedback and create user-centered experiences that drive satisfaction and retention.
  • Foster a culture of creativity, innovation, and collaboration. Provide guidance and feedback to team members to ensure high-quality design deliverables.
  • Develop, maintain, and steward design artifacts in support of communicating user research (e.g. personas, journey maps, and service blueprints).
  • Leverage analytics, competitive analyses, market research, and qualitative research to illuminate holistic member needs.
  • Stay on top of and incorporate latest competitive and technological trends into design recommendations.
  • Apply knowledge of UX, design best practices, design psychology, design systems, and optimized process flows in support of concept development.
  • Coordinate and conduct usability testing sessions to validate design concepts and gather user insights. Use testing results to iterate and refine designs for optimal user experiences.
  • Evaluate digital product content to develop intuitive experiences. This includes interaction flows, terminologies, taxonomies and other content across products and channels.

Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of human-centered design (HCD) methodologies and application to a variety of problems, large and small
  • Experience working in and leading multi-disciplinary teams from research through to delivery
  • Use design to communicate complex concepts simply and always strive to make things tangible, whether they’re conversations, frameworks, or ideas
  • Proficient working with tools such as Figma, FigJam, Mural, Dovetail, Usertesting.com, and Coda
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • At least 7 years of experience in Design Strategy or User Experience (UX) design
  • At least 3 years in a lead role

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree (Business, Design, Human Computer Interaction)
  • 4+ years of experience with a financial services company
  • Background in human factors, psychology, and behavioral discipline
  • Spanish language fluency is strongly preferred.
