As a Sr. Engineering Manager within Oportun, you will have the opportunity to work across the organization helping to align on software development technology vision. You will maintain awareness of changes in techniques, tools and frameworks and help influence their usage in a pragmatic way to improve the team's productivity. You will be working on defining, driving, and delivering the technical roadmap of the team, hiring talented engineers who can continue to build out our scalable systems, and defining the underlying core platform.

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are looking for experienced data engineering leaders with a passion for leveraging modern tech stacks in data, developing people, driving product development and engineering excellence, along with scaling teams. Your role will be technology and people focused, while helping drive the development of Oportun’s core products.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit and strong product engineers and future technical leaders
  • Build a strong, high performing teams by driving forming a strong team culture of safety, accountability, and empathy and effectively driving team execution
  • Collaborate with partners in Product, Design, and other engineering leads to drive team vision and strategy - product roadmap, execution and resource plan, and setting priorities
  • Level up the technical skills in data engineering for your team by reviewing pull requests and technical specs, empowering and leveraging your tech lead, and being able and willing to get your hands dirty and help your team debug issues and ship code when needed
  • Drive strong data engineering practices around product development execution, operational excellence in observability, quality, reliability, and developer efficiency
  • Effectively communicate and build alignment up, down and sideways across the organization
  • Be a champion for Diversity and Inclusion by sourcing, hiring, and advocating for a diverse group of engineers
  • Responsible for creating and influencing innovative solutions that meet not only functional, but also performance, scalability and reliability requirements.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who loves ownership and responsibility while working in a collaborative and interdependent team environment.
  • Work with multiple teams of data engineers to design, develop, and test major software and data systems components using an agile, scrum methodology.
  • Translation of complex functional and technical requirements into detailed execution plans and schedules; manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team by defining, implementing and maintaining a coherent, progressive development strategy for our product line.
  • Management and execution against project plans and delivery commitments
  • Management of departmental resources, staffing, and enhancing and maintaining a best-of-class data engineering team
  • Build, Guide and Coach the Scrum Team on how to use Agile practices and principles to deliver high quality products, facilitate and support all scrum Agile ceremonies for the teams as Scrum master.
  • Deliver capabilities using agile practices in Software Development
  • Lifecycle, business process mapping, and various release processes as appropriate to ensure all risk, security, and development requirements are met
  • Ensure the craftsmanship, security, availability, resilience, and scalability of solutions developed by the teams.
  • Evolution of the software engineering practice within the organization, including better reporting, tools, and evolution of development methodology
  • Continue to build an effective development organization by developing and managing the group, and conducting performance reviews of team members

REQUIREMENTS

  • 12+ years of overall experience in software engineering with Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of recent management experience in data engineering, managing more than one team during that time with 10+ team members
  • 5+ years of individual contributor engineering experience building products with a modern tech stacks, preferably in data engineering. Good knowledge of data processing methodologies, cloud solutions and services for handling batch and stream data, warehousing and analytics. Usage of REST and various relational and NoSQL datastores in an agile environment would be good.
  • Demonstrated track record of building and managing high performing product engineering teams in a fast paced, high impact, high growth environment
  • Passion for building and shipping products users love with high quality and speed

  • Enjoy staying technical and is able and willing jump in and code or debug issues to help your team
  • Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong project management skills and can keep your team and yourself organized with effective prioritization, while juggling multiple projects and priorities

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate well with product, design, and other engineering teams to ship product
  • Experience in the design of new systems or redesign of existing systems to meet business req’s,
    changing needs, or newer technology.
  • Ability to break down complex concepts into easily understood frameworks and models.
  • Excellence in technical communication with peers and non-technical cohorts
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software
    development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management,
    build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Passion and convictions and the innate ability to inspire passion in others, and the ability to
    establish and sell the business and technical vision for a complicated problem area
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience or Knowledge in financial services domain.
  • Experience or Knowledge of one or more data processing frameworks using AWS will be a strong plus.
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
