The Security Data Engineer develops, owns, manages, and improves the technical data security controls that protect data across the enterprise. This role blends security leadership, engineering, and analytical skills to design, specify, deploy, and operate the solutions that protect our member data across all our data sources. Engineers are responsible for improving our data security processes and operations program including connecting to multiple data sources, scanning for sensitive information that is not protected, and reporting on those findings to help remediate with data or application owners.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partner with engineering, data engineering and analytics teams to connect to and detect sensitive information that is not protected across various Oportun data assets.
  • Participate in and helping lead data security findings and remediation activities across Oportun and its data sources.
  • Develop and implement solutions to identify, catalog, and analyze risk-based data sources.
  • Work with AWS tools or other applications that scan data sources for sensitive information.
  • Interpret the results of data findings working across teams to champion and implement reasonable mitigations and remediations.
  • Write code where needed to automate controls and processes where possible and to deploy new data security capabilities.
  • Identify gaps in coverage of the Oportun data security controls and working across teams to specify and deploy improvements that address these gaps.
  • Select and/or create specific applications and functions that integrate with the Oportun platform and build systems that provide the right detective controls that alert on unprotected sensitive information.
  • Provide data security subject matter expertise and being a champion of data protection.
  • Ensure cross company support for all aspects of data security by establishing partnerships with other Oportun teams with the overarching goal of reducing the data risk of sensitive data across Oportun and its various data sources.
  • Drive program metrics and necessary automation to measure data hygiene policies across Oportun.
  • Support CISO driven Cybersecurity initiatives, around data security, to help maintain and grow the cyber defense posture of the company.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3+ years of experience with Data Platforms with data security as the focus
  • Bachelor’s degree / Graduate degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the role (e.g. IT, Computer Science, etc.)
  • Experience with data discovery & classification tools such as Dig Security, AWS Macie, Python scripting and other similar Data Security Posture Management tools.
  • Experience with SQL technologies (MySQL, etc.), AWS S3, Windows or Linux file systems.
  • Direct experience working with SaaS cloud-based applications in AWS Cloud
  • Excellent data detective skills for analyzing large quantities of data.
  • Demonstrated history of successful cross-organizational efforts
  • Proficiency in analyzing data with regex, grok patterns, or other pattern matching.
  • Ability to analyze problems and make appropriate decisions quickly.
  • Ability to drive large, complex programs and solutions using both direct and virtual teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including presenting business objectives to small groups.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work flexibly and independently to achieve results.
