The context:

Across the developing world, more children than ever are in school – but they are not learning. A recent study estimated that less than 1% of school children in Sub-Saharan Africa attend a school where the teaching meets basic standards of quality. At Rising Academies, we’re changing that, and we want your help. Our mission is to create the best schools and the most powerful teaching and learning tools for the people that need it most. We’re one of the fastest-growing quality-focused education companies in Africa, and a Certified B Corp®.

About us and our work in Rwanda:

We own and operate our own great value private schools, partner with governments to improve the quality of public school systems, and use our content and technology to help other education providers. Founded in Sierra Leone in 2014, we provided emergency education to children kept out of school by the Ebola Epidemic before opening our first school in April 2015. Today, we serve more than 250,000 students across more than 900 schools in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana and now Rwanda.

Through great curriculum, intensive teacher coaching and actionable data, we help teachers and school leaders bring quality to every classroom. And we get results: independent studies show Rising students make more than twice the progress of their peers in comparable schools.

Rwanda has made significant strides in education, improving enrollment and access over the past two decades. However, despite these achievements, learning outcomes remain low, with only a portion of students meeting grade-level expectations in literacy and numeracy. Rising has already demonstrated significant improvements in foundational literacy and numeracy through initiatives like FasterReading and FasterMath. Recently, Rising partnered with the Government of Rwanda to expand these efforts across public schools, focusing on scalability, sustainability, and alignment with national educational goals through the Rwanda AI Innovation for Schools (RAISE) project.

The RAISE initiative builds on Rising’s successful work in foundational literacy and numeracy, aligning with national priorities and partnering closely with the Rwandan Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) and the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB). By harnessing AI, the project aims to personalize learning, streamline teacher workloads, and enhance data-driven decision-making across Rwanda’s education system.

About the role:

We are looking for an exceptional Monitoring and Evaluation Assistant to support the effective implementation of the Rwanda AI Innovation for Schools initiative by ensuring timely and accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting. The M&E Assistant will play a key role in tracking the impact of three AI tools deployed in schools, providing insights to improve teacher practices, student learning outcomes, and the overall effectiveness of the project.

You will collaborate closely with project stakeholders, including government partners, to ensure that M&E processes align with national educational priorities and contribute to data-driven decision-making.

The RAISE Monitoring and Evaluation Assistant will:

  • Collect and compile data from pilot schools, ensuring a 100% submission rate for weekly school activity reports.
  • Support the preparation of End-of-Cycle and termly reports, ensuring submission within agreed timelines.
  • Conduct additional analyses as requested, such as summarizing qualitative feedback or categorizing school performance.
  • Design, test, and administer feedback tools, including surveys and interviews, ensuring on-time delivery.
  • Share key learnings and recommendations with stakeholders to inform continuous improvement.
  • Support the MEL Associate and Project Manager in documenting school-related challenges and sharing updates with the team.
  • Act as a point of contact for schools to troubleshoot data-related challenges and provide support as needed.

Location and reporting:

This is a fixed-term full time position based in Rwanda, with occasional travel to districts involved in the project. The M&E Assistant will report to the MEL Associate and collaborate closely with the Project Manager, internal and external stakeholders.

Application deadline:
The deadline for application is February 28, 2025.

  • Proficient Excel skills and ability to present data insightfully and speak to it. Knowledge of Google Data Studio or any other statistical tools (Stata, R, SPSS) is a preferred.
  • Familiarity with data collection, survey design and survey coding (using CommCare, SurveyCTO, Kobo, or similar software)
  • Familiarity with data privacy and security practices, particularly in educational or public sectors.

About You:

  • You are passionate about using data to drive educational improvements and learning outcomes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience engaging stakeholders and summarizing data insights.
  • You are proactive, detail-oriented, and skilled at ensuring data accuracy and timeliness.
  • You thrive in collaborative environments and are motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in underserved communities.
  • You are culturally sensitive, empathetic, and demonstrate respect for local contexts and stakeholders.
  • You have the ability to learn quickly, are happy to give and receive feedback, and are interested in trying new approaches.
  • You are excited by new technologies and seek out opportunities to use technology to strengthen systems and improve learning outcomes.
