About the Role

This is a 1-year project role based full-time in Naivasha, Kenya offering hands-on experience in large-scale infrastructure projects, with opportunities for professional development and leadership in HSE management. This role will be leading the HSE during the construction of a first in its class city-wide waste to value fecal sludge treatment plant.

This Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Officer will work closely with the Sanivation construction team, the site contractors, the supervision consultants, equipment suppliers and the operations team to ensure the safety of the people on site, the environment, and the future operations of the facility being constructed. They will report directly to the Sanivation Construction Manager.

This role will directly shape the safety and sustainability of a groundbreaking sanitation project, ensuring long-term environmental and social benefits.

This role has potential to be extended beyond the first year and across many different sanitation projects throughout Kenya.

Responsibilities:

Health & Safety

  • Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific Health and Safety plans in compliance with national legislation and international standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits to identify hazards, non-compliances, and improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure that all personnel on site, including subcontractors and visitors, receive appropriate safety inductions and training.
  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses,and ensure implementation of corrective actions.
  • Maintain and report on HSE performance indicators, near misses, and incidents.
  • Collaborate with supervision consultants to ensure consistent HSE enforcement and reporting across all works.

Environmental Management

  • Monitor the implementation of the project’s Environmental Social & Health Management Plans (ESHMP) aligned with local environmental regulations and Sanivation’s environmental policy.
  • Monitor construction activities to minimize environmental impact, including air quality, noise, water use, waste management, and biodiversity protection.
  • Ensure proper waste segregation, disposal, and materials handling procedures are followed
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and environmental consultants as needed to ensure compliance.

Social Management & Compliance

  • Promote and monitor adherence to labor standards, gender equity, community relations, and grievance mechanisms.
  • Identify and mitigate any adverse social impacts associated with construction activities.
  • Facilitate training and awareness sessions on community relations and social safeguards for site personnel

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate with local communities and stakeholders to ensure transparent and respectful engagement throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Serve as the key liaison between Sanivation’s internal teams and external contractors on all HSE matters.
  • Work closely with the operations team to ensure that construction decisions support long-term operational safety and sustainability.
  • Participate in regular construction meetings to provide HSE input into planning, risk assessments, and design adjustments.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness and response drills with relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  1. Diploma in Health and Safety or related degree
  2. 3-5 years of experience in health and safety roles at busy sites
  3. DOSH/NEBOSH certified
  4. In-depth understanding of OSHA regulations, DOSH guidelines, and other relevant health and safety legislation
  5. Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  6. Good analytical and strategic thinking skills and attention to details
  7. Proficiency in using standard office software (e.g., MS Office Suite)

Working Relationship with teams:

  • Collaborate with project managers and site managers
  • Finance and Procurement teams
  • Liaises with emergency service providers, security agencies, hospitals and fire departments.
  • Collaborate with business partners such as funders and project implementors.

The Health and Safety officer will be based in Naivasha
