About the role
As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to develop our technology platform, which facilitates the collection, aggregation and presentation of tree and carbon data from projects around the world. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you’ll be responsible for improving our backend services and frontend application to support the growth of Taking Root’s reforestation efforts, enabling scale and continued customer satisfaction.
This role is for you if you are a well-rounded fullstack developer with prior experience developing for both frontend and backend systems - especially in React, Next.js & Python. As a senior engineer on the team, your contributions will go beyond submitting code and include fostering a deep understanding of our users’ experiences, influencing team standards and practices, and collaborating with the product and design teams.
This is a full-time position, and we are open to full-time remote work within Canada. Our office is in Vancouver, BC, and is available for employees who prefer in-person settings. Our compensation is benchmarked and based on experience. Responsibilities
- Work with Engineering peers and leads, Product Managers, and our UX designer to scope and build new features that our customers will love
- Solve complex problems for our customers who operate in challenging environments around the world
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such Reforestation and Data Science, to ensure our services solve customer’s challenges and support the latest carbon measurement methodologies
- Implement well designed and intuitive code leveraging best practices and applicable design patterns
- Prototype and build new functionality across both backend and frontend services and applications
- Plan for scale and build in monitoring and observability up front so that our solutions keep up with us as we continue to grow
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience required

- 3+ years of experience developing within backend and frontend services; we use TypeScript, React, Next.js, RESTful API, Python (Django), Postgres, Kubernetes and others
- At least 2 years of experience specifically using React to develop web interfaces
- Experience with microservice architectures
- Proficiency in automated unit, integration, and end-to-end testing
- Applied experience with Git and CI/CD workflows
- A strong history of good communication, collaboration and supporting team members.
- A desire to apply your existing skills in pursuit of accelerating the restoration of the world’s forests
