The/Nudge is an action institute building resilient livelihoods to alleviate poverty. We work with women, farmers, tribals and youth on rural development, agriculture, skilling and economic inclusion, along with 15+ central and state government partners.
Our economic inclusion journey for 25 million Indians, has reached 10 states with $250M of government funding to cover 1.25M people. What are we solving for?
We are solving for households in poverty who are also financially and socially vulnerable through a targeted, multi-faceted, and sequenced model called the graduation approach, which has demonstrated that we can durably pull households out of poverty.
At The/Nudge Institute, we are in the process of catalysing the propagation of the same. Our purpose is to contribute to making the most excluded individuals a contributing member to the economy:
  • Enable govt to adopt by providing research, design, and implementation support
  • Continue to implement on its own to iterate the design for impact at scale
  • Enable more NGOs to adopt technical and capacity-building support
  • Continue to generate data on poverty and evidence on graduation approach to nudge governments to adopt at-scale
  • Build technology solutions for NGOs and governments to adopt and implement at scale & with quality.
Position Overview:
The/Nudge is working with the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM), Government of Assam, to help increase adoption of the graduation approach/ economic inclusion program by targeting 10,000 extremely vulnerable households, identified through community institutions under ASRLM. As part of this effort, a State Project Management Unit (SPMU) is set up at ASRLM, Guwahati, to help to design and implement Assam - Samaveshi Aajeevika Yojana (AS-SAY) sub scheme under DAY-NRLM. This position is for the SPMU at Guwahati, ASRLM and will report to the State Lead, Assam Economic Inclusion Program.
At The/Nudge Institute, you will:
  • Work closely with the Product team of The/Nudge Institute, SRLM and other Expert agencies/ NGOs to develop livelihood-specific training modules and IEC materials in the context of their respective region/ state/ project area to impart training to the project staff, community cadres/institutions and program participants to take up livelihood activities (Livestock, Agri, Non-farm) as income-generating sources.
  • Conduct extensive scoping of livelihood activities in local settings to finalise the Package of Practices (PoP) for the targeted geographies. Demystify technical aspects of livelihood practices and incorporate them in the Standard Operating Procedures in coordination with the nodal and related domains of SRLM.
  • Develop a pool of master trainers within the State by adopting a well-defined outcome oriented training calendar, collaborating with other local agencies/ NGOs, and conducting time-to-time assessments of the project staff and program participants.
Plan and strategize:
  • Livelihood training calendar
  • Livelihood activity calendar
  • Design and execution of training sessions for master trainers and community cadre.
  • Periodic monitoring and quality assessment of the Package of Practices as adopted by households through regular field visits
  • Demonstrate agility in adapting to any changed field situation in terms of continuation of livelihood activity of the program participant/household.
  • Ensure the community cadre in the program records correct data w.r.t. livelihood activities and expenses/ income. Support the team in monitoring the livelihood activities & maintenance of relevant databases at block/district/state level.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of natural, social, and market resources near project areas and plan PoP accordingly to ensure sustainable livelihood activities.
  • Leading classroom training and field demonstrations on PoP to community cadres.
  • Capacity Building of Community Institutions (CLF / VO) under ASRLM for procurement & ensuring the supply of quality inputs in the field areas.
  • Strategize and liaison for convergence of resources (vaccines, preventive medicines, low-cost feed, etc.) with the government line departments and external agencies.
  • Through regular field visits and discussions with the community, understand and forecast potential challenges and develop plans to address them in advance.
  • Extensive scoping of local markets to design robust forward linkages of products and produce generated out of PoP adopted by program participants and ensure optimal income generation within scheduled timelines of the program.
  • Developing case studies of existing good practices on livelihood activities carried out by local cadre / experts / institutions / successful cases from similar geographies / communities and planning their adoption as per project context
  • Carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the organisation from time to time.
Qualifications and Skills Required
  • Master’s Degree in Veterinary Sciences/ Animal Husbandry/ Agriculture/ Rural Management/ Economics and/or allied Social Sciences from a recognised institute.
  • Minimum 8 years of work experience in livelihood promotion for rural areas.
  • Experience working with SRLM or allied livelihood departments and a track record of stakeholder management and convergence will be an added advantage.
  • Good understanding of Farm & Non-farm livelihoods (handloom / handicraft / small business, etc.) and a willingness to learn and innovate for remote (primarily tribal) geographies.
  • Well-versed with the experience of facilitating the Package of Practices (PoPs) associated with livestock rearing (goatery / piggery / duckery / backyard poultry) and adaptability to contextualise PoPs as per geography & behavioural practices of the communities and market.
  • Well-versed with the experience of facilitating the Package of Practices (PoPs) associated with major horticultural crops (Arecanut, Cashewnut, Pineapple, etc.) and adaptability to contextualise PoPs as per geography & behavioural practices of the communities and market.
  • Ability to develop training modules and IEC materials.
  • Prior experience in the delivery of training to rural communities and community cadres.
  • Given the context of rural communities living in poverty, s/he must share an urgency about their development and a commitment to the delivery of a high-quality livelihood program in a time-bound manner.
  • Proficient with MS Office, especially in MS Excel and/or Database Management and strong presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel extensively in the desired blocks/field areas that come under the project districts.
