Job Overview
Ubongo is seeking a skilled and experienced Media Consultant to support our DRC expansion efforts as part of our Growth team. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of DRC’s media landscape and a strong network within the broadcasting industry.
In collaboration with Ubongo, the Media Consultant will play a crucial role in identifying and securing high-reach broadcasters, alternative distribution channels, sourcing key contacts and organizational information, and attending broadcast pitch meetings to generate awareness and interest in Ubongo’s educational content. Additionally, the consultant will provide strategic guidance on media engagement, distribution channels, and best practices to ensure a successful entry and expansion into DRC’s broadcast space.
The ideal candidate should have extensive experience in media partnerships and broadcast negotiations in DRC, along with a strong ability to navigate the local regulatory and cultural landscape. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to Ubongo’s mission of improving numeracy and literacy for children across Africa by expanding our reach into the DRC.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibilities for this role will include:
- Identify and establish relationships with high-reach TV and radio broadcasters in DRC.
- Facilitate and attend pitch meetings to present Ubongo’s content and secure distribution agreements.
- Provide insights on DRC’s media landscape, industry trends, and regulatory requirements.
- Advise on best practices and strategic approaches for entering and sustaining a presence in DRC’s broadcast market.
- Monitor audience reach and engagement trends to recommend effective business development strategies.
- Negotiate licensing agreements with broadcasters.
- Advise Ubongo on regulatory requirements affecting media distribution.
- Provide recommendations on content adaptation to suit the DRC audience and cultural context.
- Provide strategic insights on DRC’s broadcast landscape and partnership opportunities
- Support the organization of targeted media engagement events where relevant
Milestones and Deliverables
The consultancy will be performance-based and structured around the following milestones. Final deliverables may be refined at contract signing, depending on the media landscape and consultant’s strategy.
Milestone 1 - Market Mapping & Entry Strategy
Timeline: End of Month 1
Required Deliverables:
- Media landscape mapping report
- Prioritized broadcaster list (minimum 10)
- Verified contact database of key people
- Outreach and engagement strategy
- Regulatory advisory note
Milestone 2 - Broadcaster Engagement Pipeline
Timeline: End of Month 3
Required Deliverables:
- Minimum agreed number of documented pitch meetings conducted
- Meeting summaries and broadcaster feedback
- Active partnership pipeline tracker
- Updated contact database
Milestone 3 - Negotiation Advancement
Timeline: End of Month 4-5
Required Deliverables:
- Broadcasters in the advanced negotiation stage or have signed contracts
- Draft agreement structures
- Regulatory and positioning advisory updates
- Strategic partnership recommendations
Milestone 4 - Final Delivery & Expansion Roadmap
Timeline: End of Month 6
Required Deliverables:
- Signed or near-final broadcaster agreements (where feasible)
- Final consultancy report
- Updated broadcaster database
- Expansion strategy and next-phase roadmap
- Lessons learned and risk assessment
Required Qualifications
Experience:
- Proven experience (5+ years) in media, broadcasting, or business development within DRC.
- Strong professional network within DRC’s TV and radio sector.
- Deep understanding of DRC’s media landscape, including TV, radio, and digital broadcasting trends.
- Experience in negotiating broadcast agreements and licensing deals.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to pitch.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating with remote teams.
- Fluency in French and English (both written and spoken) is a must.
- Deep understanding of the local broadcast and regulatory environment
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies, Communications, Journalism, Business Development, Marketing, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree in Media Management, Strategic Communications, or Business Administration is a plus.
- Equivalent professional experience in the DRC media industry may be considered in place of formal education.
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Amharic and English.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with broadcasters, government agencies, and media partners.
- Experience in advising on culturally relevant content adaptation.
- Ability to manage multiple partnerships and projects simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring all aspects of content distribution are well-coordinated.
- Experience in event planning and media-related workshops is a plus.
Contract Duration
- Duration: 6 months, with possibility of extension
- Location: DRC-based; travel within the country may be required
- Compensation: Consultancy fee based on agreed milestones and deliverables
- Reporting: Consultant reports to the Director of Growth with biweekly updates
The consultant must disclose any potential conflicts of interest with media organizations.
