Community Development Research Intern for Bali, Cities Program

This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days per month in the office. You will be based in our office in WRI Indonesia, Bali. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position.

Program Overview

WRI Indonesia’s urban mobility portfolio supports cities and provinces in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the development of sustainable and low-carbon transportation systems. The portfolio places strong emphasis on inclusive and green mobility, improved transport system efficiency, and integration with clean energy initiatives to deliver economic, social, and environmental benefits, particularly at the local and community level.

One of the key initiatives under this portfolio is the Bali Transportation Decarbonization Program, which supports Bali’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2045 in the transportation sector. The program focuses on developing a transportation decarbonization roadmap and piloting an equitable Low Emission Zone (LEZ) as a model for low-carbon and inclusive urban mobility that responds to local needs and conditions.

The transportation decarbonization approach applies the Avoid–Shift–Improve framework by reducing travel demand, promoting public and non-motorized transport, and improving vehicle and energy systems through electrification and renewable energy use. The equitable LEZ is designed not only to reduce emissions, but also to strengthen community participation, support local economic opportunities, and ensure social inclusion in the transition toward low-carbon transportation.

Effective implementation of these initiatives requires strong community engagement, social impact assessment, and evidence-based planning. To support this, WRI Indonesia seeks a Community Development Research Intern to contribute to data collection and analysis, research on green mobility and community impacts, and the provision of technical assistance to strengthen community and stakeholder engagement. The intern will play a supporting role in enhancing community involvement in transportation decarbonization initiatives as part of the Bali Net Zero Emissions 2045 agenda.

General Internship Roles

The Community Development Research Intern will support WRI Indonesia’s Bali Transportation Decarbonization Team in advancing research, analysis, and community-based initiatives related to green mobility and transportation decarbonization. The intern role combines technical and social aspects with focus on strengthening community engagement and ensuring inclusive implementation of low-carbon transportation solutions.

The intern will assist in research on transportation decarbonization and its community impacts through desk-based studies, basic data collection and analysis, and stakeholder mapping. Key activities will include supporting interviews and consultations with key stakeholders such as local communities, government agencies, civil society organizations, and private sector actors, and contributing to the preparation of research outputs, project reports, and presentation materials.

In addition, the intern will be actively involved in the implementation of the Bali Transportation Decarbonization Initiative, including the equitable Low Emission Zone (LEZ). This involves assisting with community engagement and stakeholder coordination preparation of communication and event materials related to workshops, meetings, and public outreach activities.
